Watch how dried coconut husks are crushed, spun and twisted into the tough coir rope that becomes the walkway mats you step on in parks and trails. This video was filmed at Phu Hao, a coir mat mass production factory in Ben Tre, known as Vietnam's coconut capital, which exports about 300 containers of mats every year. After the husks are crushed and the fiber is separated, it is spread into a thin layer and twisted into fine rope, then eight strands are twisted twice more into one thick rope. Two workers push the weft rope by hand in rhythm with the loom, and each mat is cut to a standard 10 m, knotted at the ends and rolled into a 65 kg roll. Many of these mats are shipped to Korea, where discarded coconut husks become a path for walkers once again.
