🥊 FIGHT DESCRIPTION:
Carlos Adames exploded out of the gates, establishing early control before surviving a determined second-half surge from Sergiy Derevyanchenko to secure a majority-decision victory in their grueling 10-round middleweight showdown. Judge Jerry Cantu scored the fiercely contested battle a 95-95 draw, but Tiffany Clinton (97-93) and Damian Walton (96-93) awarded Adames the win on the Gervonta Davis–Isaac Cruz undercard at Staples Center.
The victory propelled Adames into a high-stakes final WBC middleweight title eliminator against Mexico’s Jaime Munguía. The winner would earn a mandatory shot at Jermall Charlo’s 160-pound championship, putting Adames one step closer to a world title opportunity.
Derevyanchenko (13-4, 10 KOs), known for his compact frame at middleweight, faced a naturally bigger challenge against Dominican powerhouse Adames (21-1, 16 KOs), who made his debut at the division’s 160-pound limit. The 36-year-old Ukrainian returned to the ring for the first time since Charlo outboxed him over 12 rounds in their September 2020 WBC middleweight title fight.
Despite his reputation as an elite middleweight contender, Derevyanchenko entered the clash having lost four of his previous five bouts. Before falling to Adames and Charlo, he suffered a split-decision defeat to Daniel Jacobs in October 2018, followed by a razor-close unanimous-decision loss to Gennadiy Golovkin in their October 2019 thriller, which BoxingScene.com named its Fight of the Year.
The two warriors left nothing in reserve during a brutal, back-and-forth 10th round, trading punishing shots at close quarters as both men searched desperately for a fight-changing moment. Neither could seriously hurt the other, leaving the outcome in the hands of the judges after 10 fiercely contested rounds.
