There is no worse feeling than sliding under your vehicle for a quick, simple oil change, only to realize the last person who touched the car completely rounded off the head of the drain plug. When a bolt is over-tightened by an impact wrench, the soft metal edges strip away, leaving your wrench with absolutely nothing to grab onto!
When this happens, mechanics use a brilliant old-school extraction hack. By taking a slightly smaller socket—or a specialized fluted extraction socket—and physically hammering it directly onto the stripped bolt head, the hardened steel of the tool bites deep into the soft metal of the drain plug. This creates a brand new temporary grip, allowing you to attach a ratchet and break the stuck bolt loose! Just make sure you have a replacement plug ready to go!
