How do you diagnose a dead cylinder on a diesel engine without spark plugs?! ๐Ÿšœโ›ฝ
Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines do not use spark plugs to ignite their fuel. Instead, they rely purely on extreme compression and heat! Because you can't just pull a spark plug wire to find a misfire on a diesel, mechanics use this classic old-school trick instead.
While the engine is running, the mechanic uses a wrench to carefully loosen the nuts on the high-pressure fuel lines coming out of the injection pump. This bleeds the pressure off, completely starving that specific cylinder of fuel. If the engine bogs down and starts shaking, that cylinder was healthy! But if they crack the line open and the engine sounds exactly the same, they instantly know they've found the dead cylinder. It is a brilliant, totally free way to diagnose heavy machinery without a computer!
