A Giant Crack Is Growing in the Alps Right Now

A massive crack is growing on a mountainside in Switzerland’s Val d’Anniviers, raising fresh questions about the stability of the Alps. The enormous fracture is splitting the rocky terrain, and scientists are watching closely to understand how the mountain is changing and what could happen next. As glaciers retreat, temperatures rise, and mountain slopes weaken, cracks like this can reveal the powerful forces reshaping the high Alps. But a growing fissure does not automatically mean a catastrophic collapse is coming, and researchers need to determine whether the rock is slowly shifting or approaching a more dangerous failure. So how big is this crack, what is causing it to grow, and could it signal a serious threat to the valleys and communities below?
