President Lee Jae Myung has arrived in Mexico for a state visit.
A summit with his Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum is scheduled for tomorrow to discuss bilateral cooperation on trade, energy and K-culture.
Our Blue House correspondent Yoon Jung-min reports from Mexico City.
Having concluded his trip to the United Nations, President Lee Jae Myung has landed in Mexico as a state guest.
It is the first state visit to the Latin American country by a South Korean leader in 16 years.
President Lee will meet Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for a summit on Thursday.
He will lay a wreath at a monument dedicated to heroes of the Mexican-American War, and attend an official welcoming ceremony at the presidential palace.
The summit will involve restricted talks, an expanded session, an exchange of MOUs, lunch and joint press conference, as the leaders discuss strengthening strategic cooperation.
"We will discuss ways to further expand trade and investment and institutionalize support measures for our companies doing business in Mexico. Also, we will discuss cooperation in energy and mineral supply chains with Mexico, which owns abundant natural resources such as crude oil."
Partnership in AI, aerospace and the defense industry could also be addressed.
Mexico is currently focusing on modernizing its military.
On Friday, President Lee will attend a business forum and visit "2026 K-Expo Mexico," as the popularity of Korean culture grows in the Latin American country.
In May, Sheinbaum invited BTS to the National Palace ahead of the band's concert in Mexico City.
"Mexico is the largest K-Pop market in the Central and South American region, and also the No. 1 consumer of K-beauty and K-food in the region."
Blue House officials call Mexico a major trading partner and a key gateway to the North American market, as President Lee looks to diversify the nation's diplomatic partnerships.
