APK 2026 서울 개최 글로벌 불확실성 속 한독 경제협력 강화
We continue our coverage of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's two-day visit to Korea.
A day after holding summit talks with President Lee Jae Myung, Merz joined the Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business in Seoul today to explore new opportunities for economic cooperation between the two countries and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
Kim Jun-hong has the highlights.
More than 7-hundred political and business leaders gathered in Seoul on Friday for the 19th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business, or APK.
The event comes as Germany seeks closer economic ties with the region as the global industrial landscape rapidly changes.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for resilient and reliable partnerships, saying South Korea and Germany have a defining role to play together.
"So South Korea, as all of you know, is an impressive example of what is possible in a free market, technological excellence, and political will converge "
South Korea's Prime Minister highlighted the two countries' shared strengths in manufacturing, calling for deeper cooperation in three areas: batteries, semiconductors and AI-driven manufacturing.
"Germany is South Korea's largest trading partner in Europe, while South Korea is a key partner for Germany in Asia. Investment between the two countries has also grown rapidly, reaching 7.8 billion dollars over the past five years."
The opening session examined how changes in global power are affecting economic ties between Germany and the Indo-Pacific region.
"Indo-Pacific is no longer just a region of economic opportunities. In some sense, it has also become a center of geopolitical competition and tensions. For Korea, this present both challenges and opportunities "
Discussions also focused on how new technologies could transform manufacturing sectors and create business opportunities.
"You have to look at finally how does technology hit the market and creates new markets, this is where industrial AI comes to play and this is the biggest opportunity coming to question what we can do together as partners in the region "
The conference continues Saturday with the Siemens chief and Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon set to discuss the future of industrial AI.
Business leaders say closer ties between South Korea and Germany are increasingly important amid global uncertainty and technological change. Both countries are looking to strengthen cooperation in technology and advanced manufacturing.
