미 연준 금리 동결, 물가 압박과 글로벌 불확실성 속 경제 전망은?

Welcome to Within The Frame, where we bring the most pressing issues across the globe into focus. I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
The U.S. Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75 to 4 percent, pausing after September's rate hike.
But the decision comes at a tricky time. Inflation in the U.S. remains stubbornly high, job growth is slowing, and financial markets are sending mixed signals.
Meanwhile, massive AI investment is helping drive economic growth, but high borrowing costs, rising energy prices, and geopolitical tensions are raising questions about how long that growth can last.
And with the Bank of Korea also holding rates steady, the Fed's next move could have implications far beyond the United States.

To explore more on this, we connect to Kim Yong-Jin, Professor at Sogang Business School. Welcome.

Also joining us is Sunhyung Lee, Assistant Professor of Economics at Montclair State University. Good to see you.

1. Let's start with the Fed's latest decision. Why did it hold rates steady after September's hike? And was this the right call for the U.S. economy?

2. Looking at the vote itself, the decision was 10 to 2. What does this split tell us about the Fed's future policy direction?

3. Turning to the broader economy, the Fed says growth, consumer spending, and business investment remain strong.
But with borrowing costs still high, how sustainable is this growth?

4. And there's also the challenge of balancing inflation and employment.
With U.S. inflation at 3.7 percent and just around 30,000 jobs added in September, what should the Fed prioritize?

5. Turning to the markets, stocks edged higher after the decision, but Treasury yields were mixed.
What does this tell us about how investors are interpreting the Fed's message?

6. Looking ahead to December, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh says he wants to see more economic data before making another move.
What could determine whether the Fed raises rates again?

7. Beyond interest rates, AI investment has become a major driver of U.S. growth and productivity.
But given the high costs involved, can this spending translate into lasting profits and sustainable growth?

8. Finally, let's look at the global outlook. The IMF expects growth of 3.1 percent this year and 3.4 percent in 2027, but warns of geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, and risks surrounding AI investment. What will be the biggest factor shaping the global economy next year?

That's where we'll leave our discussion tonight, Prof.Kim and Professor Lee, thank you both for joining me this evening and sharing your insights.

That will be all from us on Within the Frame.
Be sure to tune in next time as we continue to explore the stories that matter. Until then, stay informed and engaged!
