Substantive progress expected early next year for wartime OPCON transfer: NSA

위성락 "내년 초 SCM서 전작권 실질 성과 거둘 것"

National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac says he expects substantive progress early next year regarding the OPCON transfer.
He told reporters on Friday that the issue will be addressed when the defense chiefs of South Korea and the U.S. meet in December ahead of the Security Consultative Meeting early next year.
Wi added that Presidents Lee Jae Myung and Donald Trump reaffirmed last month their commitment to cooperate on the transfer of wartime operational control and agreed to continue follow-up talks.
He added that South Korea has built up its capabilities for a transfer over the past 20 years, and a Full Operational Capability verification assessment was completed this year.
