A single Korean calligraphy brush passes through more than a hundred touches of the artisan's hand before it can draw one clean stroke. At Baeksan Pilbang, a traditional brush workshop in Insadong, Seoul, master Jeon Sang-gyu has been binding brushes for over 60 years and was recognized in 2018 as the holder of Seoul Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 5, Baekmopiljang. Every brush begins as a handful of white goat hair that is torn from the raw hide, combed clean, and degreased with burnt rice bran ash pressed under a low-heat iron until the fibers finally lie in one direction. The sorted hair is stood upright, cut to size, rolled into an inner core, wrapped in an outer layer, and checked once more while wet to catch every short strand. A hollowed bamboo handle, pierced with a red-hot awl, is fitted to the head, and a final soak in seaweed glue sets the tip into a perfect cone.
