For a thousand years, Korean roof tiles were shaped from clay and fired in a kiln, but this factory never lights a flame. Haesung Donggiwa in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province presses traditional Korean roof tiles from sheets of 99.9% pure copper, weighing just one tenth of clay tiles. Flat copper blanks are cut to size, hemmed along the edges, rolled into a curve, and pressed into the rounded body of a tile. A steel die then stamps the traditional pattern onto the eaves tile, bringing motifs once fired in clay back to life on metal. The two halves are locked together with no margin for error, because a single misaligned seam would let rainwater seep through.
