New Bund, new glow: Shanghai's riverside turns into a night forest

Shanghai's New Bund has launched a six-week lifestyle festival running until November 1st, turning its streets and riverside into an open-air light gallery. An 800-meter street becomes a glowing forest with nearly 20 installations, while Qiantan Leisure Park adds ten interactive light pieces alongside three flower seas and five themed gardens. Four markets follow, from coffee (Oct 1–4) to cocktails (Oct 22–Shanghai's New Bund has launched a six-week lifestyle festival running until November 1st, transforming its commercial streets and riverside park into an open-air light gallery. The 800-meter Qianjiatan street becomes a glowing forest, with nearly 20 light installations — deer, flamingos and hummingbirds — hidden among the trees. It's free, and it runs every night until the festival closes.

The light trail extends along the riverside at Qiantan Leisure Park, where ten interactive installations respond to movement: step closer, and they bloom. By day, the same area turns into a floral paradise, with three flower seas, five themed gardens and a 3.3-kilometer flower train looping through it all.

Four markets roll out one after another: a coffee carnival from October 1st to 4th, a tipsy carnival from October 22nd to 25th, and a bread festival from October 30th to November 1st, bringing 200-plus baking brands from 37 cities across China. Nearly a hundred local businesses are also offering deals throughout.

Organizers say the festival is part of a broader push to blend culture, commerce and nightlife along the river. With flowers, light, music and markets all in one place, New Bund is where Shanghai goes this autumn.
