UK police arrest five near US air base used in war against Iran over suspected explosives plot

British counter-terrorism police have launched a major investigation after arresting five men near RAF Fairford, a strategic UK air base operated by the US Air Force. Armed officers intercepted three suspicious vehicles traveling toward the airfield in the early hours of Sunday, detaining the suspects under terrorism legislation on suspicion of explosives offenses. Explosive ordnance disposal teams were deployed to examine the vehicles, while authorities evacuated residents from the nearby Cotswolds village of Whelford to a local leisure center as a safety precaution.

Speaking to reporters in Chicago, US President Donald Trump praised the joint operation between American and British intelligence agencies, stating that the suspects had been monitored for a long time and were attempting to inflict "big damage" on the base. RAF Fairford, which houses the US Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing, serves as a vital hub for heavy bomber operations. Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism detectives have taken the lead in the inquiry as security remains heightened around the perimeter.
