One of the most beautiful stories from Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's life reveals how science, spirituality, and humanity came together to help build India's space programme. 🇮🇳❤️

In the early 1960s, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was searching for a suitable location to establish a rocket-launching station near the magnetic equator. The coastal village of Thumba in Kerala was ideal, but the land was home to a Catholic church, the Bishop's residence, and a large fishing community. Sarabhai approached Reverend Father Peter Pereira, seeking the land for scientific research. The request meant asking the community to give up places deeply connected to their faith and everyday lives.

According to Dr. Kalam's account, the Bishop invited Sarabhai to the church and explained the purpose of science to the congregation: science could improve material well-being, healthcare, communication, and prosperity, while spirituality could bring peace to people's lives. He asked the community whether they would offer the land for scientific work. After a moment of silence, the congregation responded, “Amen.” The church, the Bishop's residence, and the surrounding land were subsequently made available for India's scientific mission.

The site became the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS), an important milestone in the development of India's space programme. What makes this story extraordinary is not just the science, but the trust and cooperation that made it possible. A scientist, a religious leader, and a local community came together around a shared belief that knowledge should serve humanity.

As Dr. Kalam reflected, science and spirituality do not have to stand apart. They can work together to connect people, communities, and civilizations.
