T. N. Seshan, the 10th Chief Election Commissioner of India, became one of the most influential figures in the history of Indian elections during his tenure from 1990 to 1996. Known for his uncompromising approach to electoral rules and the Model Code of Conduct, Seshan helped strengthen the authority and credibility of the Election Commission at a time when money power, electoral malpractice and political influence were major concerns.
In this archival interview, Seshan makes a distinction that captures his entire philosophy of public office: โI am NOT the Chief Election Commissioner of the Government of India. But I am Chief Election Commissioner of India.โ He went on to explain that the Election Commission was not simply an extension of the government and that he was answerable to the President, the people, Parliament in the larger sense, and the courts. ๐ฎ๐ณ
He also reflected on the credibility of elections, contrasting India with countries where elections carried little public trust. His words remain a powerful reminder of the importance of institutional independence, constitutional responsibility and integrity in public service.
