Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the legendary โMissile Man of India,โ helped develop some of India's most advanced missile technologies. But one of the most moving stories from his scientific journey had nothing to do with weapons, military power, or national security. It was about children who struggled to walk. ๐ฎ๐ณโค๏ธ
While working in Hyderabad, Dr. Kalam met Professor L. N. Prasad, an orthopaedic doctor who showed him children suffering from polio who had to wear heavy metal and wooden calipers weighing around 4 kilograms. Inspired by the lightweight, high-strength material used in the heat shield of India's Agni missile, Kalam and his team adapted the technology to create much lighter calipers weighing just 400 grams.
The difference was extraordinary. According to Kalam's account, children who had struggled with the heavy supports began running after receiving the lighter calipers. Their parents were moved to tearsโand Kalam described those tears as one of the highest honours of his life.
For him, scientific achievement was not measured only by missiles, technology, or national defence. It was also measured by the suffering that science could remove and the lives it could transform. A technology developed for a missile had found another purpose: helping children move more freely, live more comfortably, and experience a childhood with fewer physical barriers.
โThat tears gave me fantastic happinessโฆ that is the highest level that I call the honour of the highest level.โ ๐ฅน๐ฎ๐ณ
This is the legacy of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalamโa scientist who showed that the greatest power of knowledge lies not only in what it can build, but in how it can serve humanity. ๐ซกโค๏ธ
