China sees record foreign visitor growth as visa-free policies boost international travel

China is seeing more foreign visitors than any year before driven by a series of visa-free travel rules. Between January and August 2026, border checkpoints handled 499 million cross-border trips, an 8.7% jump from last year. 23.72 million foreigners entered visa-free, making up nearly 80% of all international arrivals.

As a major global gateway, Shanghai welcomed over 30 million cross-border travelers by September 10, hitting this milestone much faster than last year.

China’s National Immigration Administration (NIA) promised to keep rolling out flexible border measures and upgrading checkpoint technology to make visits simpler for tourists and business travelers.
