We sometimes joke about our own work:

“There isn’t even the slightest trace of gravitas or seriousness in our work.”

There was a time when we were taught that good art should carry a certain kind of “weight.”
It had to be serious, appear profound, and possess an atmosphere that resisted easy consumption.

But then we began to wonder:

What is it that makes us feel the weight of a work of art?

Is it the color?
The scale?
The material?
The artist’s name?
The museum in which it is displayed?
Or the stories surrounding the work and the knowledge we already carry with us?

Today, we often encounter works of art through images before we encounter the originals.

Through photographs and video, music and editing, we watch a work being made. We move closer to it. We experience the time in which it changes and disappears.

But we were never there.

We never felt the heat of the fire, never touched the materials, and never stood before the work at its actual scale.

And yet, we feel that we experienced something.

A reproduced image no longer has to remain merely a record proving that an original once existed.
Through music, editing, time, and narrative, it can create another experience—one that did not exist in the original itself.

And if we later stand before the actual work carrying that experience with us, are we still looking at the same work in the same way?

Perhaps video does not simply take the aura away from the original.
Perhaps it can make the original feel even more extraordinary.

Then does the aura we feel in a work of art really reside within the work itself?

Or is it produced within the structure of experience that makes us perceive something as special?

Popular culture has long known how to create experiences through images, music, editing, and narrative. We accept this so naturally that we hardly notice it anymore.

So we applied that familiar method to painting.

We paint, cover, attach, burn, and erase.

The physical work continues to change, while the camera preserves those moments.

And then we ask:

What remains in the end?

A record?
A reproduction?
Or another work of art?

그것은 음악과 편집, 시간과 서사를 통해 원본에는 없었던 또 다른 경험을 만들어낼 수도 있다.

그리고 그 경험을 가지고 실제 작품 앞에 선다면, 우리는 이전과 같은 작품을 보고 있는 것일까?

어쩌면 영상은 원본의 아우라를 빼앗는 것이 아니라 오히려 그것을 더 특별하게 느끼도록 만들 수도 있다.

그렇다면 우리가 작품에서 느끼는 아우라는 정말 작품 안에 존재하는 것일까?
