China opens $10.75 billion Pinglu Canal, giving its landlocked southwest a direct gateway to the sea

China has opened the Pinglu Canal, a new $10.75 billion mega-waterway that gives the country's landlocked southwest a direct shortcut to the ocean. The 134-kilometer canal makes it much faster to trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which are China's biggest trading partners.

By cutting the journey to the sea by more than 560 kilometers, the canal allows giant 5,000-tonne cargo ships to slash transportation costs by up to 30%, saving businesses billions of dollars every year.

During the four-year build, engineers created massive ship locks to move boats past a 20-story drop in water levels. They also protected nature by recycling 98% of the dug-up dirt and building safe pathways for fish and wildlife.
