Shanghai is bidding farewell to its latest batch of military recruits this week, with districts across the city holding send-off ceremonies and pre-service training as the 2026 fall enlistment drive reaches its peak.
Xuhui District held its send-off ceremony on Monday at the Fengxian Campus of East China University of Science and Technology.
More than 250 outstanding young people were selected from over 1,000 applicants after strict physical examinations, political assessments, and multiple rounds of screening.
Jinshan, Fengxian and Jiading districts held send-off ceremonies for new recruits on Tuesday.
Before departure, many relatives and friends made a special trip to see them off.
In 2020, China adjusted its compulsory military conscription from an annual cycle to a twice-a-year enlistment and retirement system, with summer-autumn recruitment accounting for 55 percent of the annual quota.
