전 세계의 물리적 통화 총량은 과연 얼마나 될까요?
학교 '수학 및 경제 심화 주간'의 벌룬 디베이트(Balloon Debate)에서, 저희 팀은 전 세계의 물리적 통화 총량을 미국 달러로 환산하여 계산하는 프로젝트를 진행했습니다. 본선에 진출하진 못했지만, 정말 많은 시간을 쏟은 연구라 그 과정을 공유하고 싶었어요.

대부분의 팀이 주요국 GDP에 현금 비율을 곱하는 방식을 썼지만, 저희는 IMF의 실제 데이터를 구간별 로그 모델에 적용해 빠르게 변화하는 전 세계 통화량과 실제 경제 흐름을 반영하려 했습니다.

그 결과, 대부분의 팀이 "내년에도 현금은 늘어난다"는 결론을 낸 것과 달리 저희는 정반대 결과에 도달했습니다. 수확 체감의 법칙과 디지털 전환을 반영한 결과, 2024년을 전환점으로 전 세계 물리적 통화가 오히려 수축하고 있다는 거죠.

How much physical currency, actual banknotes and coins, exists in the entire world?

For a Balloon Debate during our school's Math and Economic Enrichment Week, my team took on the challenge of calculating the world's total physical currency, converted into US dollars. We didn't make it to the final rounds, but we put so much work into this that I wanted to share what we found.

While most teams multiplied major countries' GDP by a cash ratio, we applied the IMF's actual data to a piecewise logarithmic model, aiming to capture the rapidly changing global money supply and real economic trends.

As a result, while most teams concluded that cash would keep growing next year, we reached the opposite result. Factoring in the law of diminishing returns and the global shift to digital, we found that the world's physical currency has actually started shrinking, with 2024 as the turning point.
