Typhoon Saudel-triggered landslide killed at least five in E. China; over 5,000 evacuated

At least five people were killed and seven others are missing as of 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday after after they were buried by a landslide in E. China's Jiangxi Province, as the region continued to battle severe flooding brought by Typhoon Saudel.
The landslide hit Gaoping, a mountainous town of Jiangxi, at around 4am on Saturday.
As of 10 pm on Saturday, 641 search and rescue personnel had been deployed to the site.
Also in the most-hit Suichuan County, where the mudslide-struck Gaoping town belongs, a key bridge was completely washed away.
No casualties were reported as the bridge had been closed off prior to the collapse.
"It's affecting our travel. We have to go around from the opposite bank of the river to get here. It's inconvenient, but we have no other choice."
In neighboring Wan’an County, rising river levels also prompted massive evacuations.
Roads inside the village have mostly reopened, and communication signals
have been restored, as of Monday.
As of 4 pm on Saturday, Typhoon Saudel had affected 183,600 people in Jiangxi, causing direct economic losses of 343 million yuan ($51.1 million), according to the authorities.
China's Ministry of Natural Resources raised its geological disaster response for Jiangxi from Level IV to III at 11 am Saturday and dispatched a work team to the site to guide rescue efforts.
