A 14-Year-Old Got Pulled Into Detroit’s Drug World… And Everyone Wanted to Use Him

In White Boy Rick (2018), the story begins with young Rick Wershe Jr. following his father to a gun show. His dad buys a batch of weapons, hoping to flip them for profit back in Detroit. But even this early, Rick shows he is not just some clueless kid. He knows how to talk, how to read people, and how to move through dangerous situations without looking scared.

Back in Detroit, Rick starts getting close to the local drug scene.

That is where he meets Johnny “Lil Man” Curry, a powerful drug dealer with money, status, cars, jewelry, women, and people around him who treat him like royalty. To a poor teenager like Rick, Johnny’s world looks exciting. It looks like freedom, respect, and power — everything Rick does not really have at home.

Rick’s own life is messy. His father is always chasing bad deals, and his sister is slipping deeper into trouble. So when Rick enters Johnny Curry’s circle, he finally feels like people see him as useful.

And that is exactly why he becomes valuable.

Rick is a white teenager, which makes him stand out. He can talk his way into places, move around without looking like a cop, and does not fit the usual image of a street dealer or gang member. Johnny sees potential in him, and Rick starts hanging around the crew, running errands, making connections, and getting pulled deeper into guns and drug deals.

At first, Rick just wants money and respect. But the deeper he goes, the more dangerous it gets — because in Detroit’s criminal world, being useful also means being disposable.
