Why did oil just violently shoot out of this open engine block?! 🚗💦
When rebuilding a car engine, mechanics will often spin the short block using the starter motor before bolting the cylinder head on. This allows them to verify that the pistons are moving smoothly inside the cylinders without any binding. More importantly, it allows them to safely prime the engine's oil pump!
The oil pump sits at the bottom of the engine and pushes heavy lubrication up through vertical passages (called oil galleries) to eventually feed the camshafts in the cylinder head. By cranking the open engine, this mechanic forces the pump to suck up oil and push it through the block. The second it violently bubbles out of the deck, he knows the system has perfect pressure!
