Flame-retardant sofas cannot be stamped out on a production line, so each one is built by hand, one unit at a time, to fit the exact dimensions of the room it will live in. DS Sofa, a custom sofa workshop in Cheonan, South Korea, designs and manufactures every piece in-house, from the plywood frame to the final leather panel. In this video, craftsmen raise curved and straight frames from cut plywood, layer them with foam padding, and cut the leather hides on a CNC machine that traces every curve without error. The hides are sewn into a diamond pattern, stretched taut over the frames, and pulled into shape with buttons threaded clean through the sofa on a long needle. What comes out is a pair of karaoke-room sofas that resist catching fire and leave no gap against the wall.
