Sisters attend a party.

Emily and Nina's mother, Josephine, is getting remarried, and Josephine is throwing an engagement party to celebrate. The sisters grit their teeth and attend, but the occasion is a tense one, despite its extravagance.

But when their stepfather-to-be Gill reveals that they're selling the family home, Emily and her sister rebel, embarrassing their mother and jeopardizing her standing in Gill's family. As tensions come to a head, Emily must confront what's happening in more ways than one.

Directed by Holly Fraser and written by Sami Swilks, this intimate, emotionally incisive short family drama captures the shifting seismic undercurrents of a family in tradition, as a mother remarries and her adult daughters reckon with loss and change. Shot with a luminous naturalistic warmth, its visual coziness belies the difficult feelings coming to the surface as they reckon with their thorny emotional realities. The film explores these with both honesty and a delicate touch that unveils its emotional layers beautifully.

The film initially sets up the sisterly relationship between Emily and Nina, endowing them with a girlish sense of fun and a grown-up sense of mischievous rebellion, brought to life with understatement and believable rapport by actors Sara West and Heidi May as Emily and Nina, respectively. Nina seems more childlike and free-spirited while Emily is more grounded, but their bond is one of affection and conspiratorial fun, which finds a vent at the engagement party, which Emily especially is not looking forward to. She and her mother, played with wrangle over Emily's attitude, which, combined with the revelation that their family home is being sold, sparks a more outright rebellion.

As the film develops, so does the deeper history and relationships between sisters and mothers, revealing a deeper tragedy at the film's core. It unfurls as a reveal, but it functions as much more than a clever plot twist. Instead, it reveals something deep within the characters' emotional terrain, a deep sorrow -- one whose comfort can only really come with the love and understanding of a loved one. Insightful, empathetic and beautifully absorbing, it makes NOT YET a deeply compassionate and moving watch about grief, trauma and how deeply we want to insulate ourselves from these. But it's also wise to how loved ones stay and live within us, lingering with love and memory -- and how it can be hard to let go enough to move forward.
