BTS 남미 투어 시작 진화하는 글로벌 아미
Welcome to Within The Frame, where we bring the most pressing issues across the globe into focus. I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
BTS is set to kick off its South American tour in Bogotá, Colombia, on October 2nd, marking another major chapter in the group’s global return after completing military service.
And the excitement goes well beyond the concerts themselves, with local and regional governments across South America joining in to welcome the group.
The tour is also putting a renewed spotlight on ARMY, a global fanbase that has grown into a highly connected community involved in everything from social causes to civic action.
Today, we take a closer look at what makes South American ARMY unique, how the fandom has evolved, and what this new chapter could mean for the relationship between BTS and its fans.
For more on this, we are joined by Grace Lee, Director of the documentary "BTS ARMY: Forever We Are Young." Welcome.
1. Let’s start with the bigger picture. Having followed BTS and ARMY over the years, what has impressed you most about their global fandom?
2. You’ve met ARMY in the various countries while making BTS ARMY: Forever We Are Young.
From what you’ve seen, what stands out about the way fans connect and organize?
3. We’ve also seen fans become more vocal. In Chile, fans pushed back after the government initially denied the use of the National Stadium, and the concert was later approved after organizers came up with additional measures.
What did that episode tell you about how ARMY has evolved?
4. More broadly, ARMY’s activities now go far beyond concerts and supporting BTS, extending to donations, environmental campaigns and volunteer work.
What drives fans to act as a social community rather than simply as music fans?
5. Turning to your documentary, it shows people of different ages, nationalities and cultures connecting through ARMY.
Was there a particular moment during filming when the sheer diversity of the fandom really struck you?
6. At the same time, the documentary doesn’t shy away from tensions within the fandom or unhealthy expressions of fan culture.
Why was it important for you to show those more complicated sides of ARMY as well?
7. Looking back on that journey, from the concert in 2021 to completing the documentary, how did making the film change your own understanding of what a fandom can be?
8. Another striking sight at BTS concerts is fans around the world singing their songs together in Korean.
What kind of impact do you think the culture BTS and ARMY have built together has had on global pop culture?
9. And finally, BTS is back after completing military service, and ARMY is entering a new chapter with them.
As an ARMY yourself, what do you hope this community will look like in the years ahead?
That will be all from us on Within the Frame.
Be sure to tune in next time as we continue to explore the stories that matter. Until then, stay informed and engaged!0
