HOLLYWOOD, Florida – Sergey Lipinets stormed into the fight on just five days’ notice and turned a last-minute opportunity into a brutal statement victory.

The former IBF junior welterweight champion dismantled Omar Figueroa Jr., forcing a stoppage after the eighth round Saturday night in their scheduled 12-round, 140-pound main event at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Stepping in for Adrien Broner on Monday morning, Lipinets wasted no time proving that the short preparation meant nothing. From the opening bell, he brought relentless pressure, heavy punches, and a level of physical strength that Figueroa simply couldn’t withstand.

Lipinets dropped Figueroa in the second round and continued breaking him down as the punishment piled up. By the eighth, the attack had become overwhelming. Lipinets battered the battle-tested Figueroa with crushing shots, including a vicious body attack that visibly drained the former contender.

With Figueroa taking sustained punishment and struggling to respond, his father and trainer, Omar Figueroa Sr., stepped in and instructed referee Christopher Young to halt the contest after the eighth round.

Figueroa (28-3-1, 19 KOs) showed tremendous courage, but the damage was undeniable. The defeat marked his third consecutive loss, and afterward, he told Showtime’s Jim Gray that he plans to retire from boxing.

For Kazakhstan’s Lipinets (17-2-1, 13 KOs), this was more than just a win—it was a career-saving explosion. Thrown into the fight at the last minute, he answered the call with authority, dropping Figueroa early and systematically breaking him down until his corner had seen enough.

“It was the right call to stop that fight,” Lipinets said. “Right from the get-go he caught a couple of straight shots and he was getting hurt. Gradually he was getting hurt more and more. And the body shot did him in.”

By the time the eighth round ended, Figueroa had absorbed a punishing beating that left little doubt the fight needed to be stopped. Lipinets had turned a five-day opportunity into a savage reminder that he still belongs in the junior welterweight division.
