Incheon extends cross-border medical care to international children

"국경 넘어 나눔 실천" 아시아 어린이 수술 지원 20년

Incheon City has been providing medical assistance to countries across Asia for the past 20 years.
The program started in 2007 with 10 Vietnamese children and has since provided life-saving surgeries and treatment to 175 young heart disease patients from countries including Mongolia and Uzbekistan.

Born in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, six-year-old Akzhol was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition and lung disease shortly after birth.
As the youngest of six children in a struggling family, surgery was out of reach, until a South Korean organization stepped in to cover all travel, operation, and hospital fees.
Today, following a successful procedure, Akzhol is recovering smoothly and embracing a healthy new life.


"I never knew this would happen. I never imagined he could recover this much. No one can truly understand this feeling unless they go through it themselves."


Like Akzhol, 175 children with heart disease have regained their health through surgery and treatment in Incheon over the past two decades.
These young patients come from Asian partner nations, including Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan.
Under the program, a private organization identifies children in need, Incheon City covers travel costs, and two local university hospitals provide full surgical care and hospitalization.

In addition to bringing patients to Korea, South Korean medical teams have traveled directly overseas to provide care, treating roughly 6,800 patients on the ground.
Incheon City says it plans to expand these cross-border medical initiatives in the years ahead.
