48th WorldSkills begins in Shanghai with multi-tasking advanced manufacturing and autonomous robots

The 48th WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, often called the "Skills Olympics", has officially kicked off on Wednesday, bringing together hundreds of the world’s brightest young technical minds from nearly 60 countries and regions.

At the heart of the manufacturing event are two core skills where the Chinese delegation is defending a five-time championship streak. While CNC Milling uses high-speed tools to "carve" complex shapes out of a still block of metal, CNC Turning spins the metal rapidly against a fixed tool like a pottery wheel to create perfectly round parts. The final parts must be accurate to a micrometer, dozens of times thinner than a human hair.

The push toward automation is highly visible in the Autonomous Mobile Robotics, where China is aiming for a fourth consecutive gold medal. This year, the match demands that robots navigate a 4-meter by 4-meter maze completely on their own. Instead of just photographing objects, the machines must use advanced vision tracking to identify, grab and move items of various shapes, including tissue boxes, bowls and soda cans.

Experts say this reflects a shift in the robotics industry where companies no longer want standard, rigid machines; instead, they want affordable, customized robots built for specific tasks.
