세계경제연구원-KB금융 국제컨퍼런스 개최… "AI 시대 포용적 성장과 금융의 진화 모색"
The Institute for Global Economics and KB Financial Group hosted an international conference today on finance in the AI era.
Our economic correspondent Lee Ju-yeon files this report.
Global financial leaders and top economists all gathered in Seoul on Friday to map out the future of finance in the AI era.
Participants highlighted the need to spread the benefits of AI innovation across the real economy to foster inclusive growth.
"The AI era requires more inclusive finance. Financial systems must go beyond supporting innovation to open up new opportunities for more people and foster shared growth that everyone can benefit from."
Joining online, Nobel-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz warned of the risks of over-investing in AI, calling for policy action to ensure tech gains benefit essential sectors like healthcare and education.
Going a step further, strengthening South Korea’s strategic response and financial market competitiveness amid global geopolitical shifts was also introduced as a key task.
Arirang News spoke with Victor Cha to look into South Korea’s current geopolitical standing and major challenges.
Regarding Korea-U.S. trade relations, he highlighted that a Democratic-led Congress would act as a counterweight, bringing predictability for Korean firms.
"The most important thing I think for Korean business is Trump is so unpredictable. So one week the tariff rate is 15 percent, 2 weeks later it's 30 percent. That sort of unpredictability is very hard for business And so I think our midterm elections really are messaging that, that sort of volatility we're going to see less of from Washington."
Yet, he warned that the real risk lies in public friction between Seoul and Washington over key issues like the OPCON transfer and corporate disputes, urging both sides to move to closed-door negotiations.
"So clearly there needs to be a very active dialogue between the U.S. and Korea when these sorts of difficulties happen; this dialogue should not be in the press, it should be done behind closed doors, and it requires compromise, you know? It requires compromise on both sides."
Navigating these geopolitical risks while expanding AI benefits to the real economy was discussed as Seoul's core challenge.
Ultimately, global leaders agreed that finance must evolve to ensure tech-driven growth turns into sustainable, shared prosperity for all.
