한국형 핵추진잠수함 사업 본격화… 27년 착수•2030년대 중반 진수 목표
South Korea is moving ahead with its ambitious plan to develop and build its domestically produced nuclear-powered submarines.
A key defense committee has approved the project's basic strategy, paving the way for development to begin next year.
Our defense correspondent Park Kun-woo reports.
South Korea's nuclear-powered submarine project is closer to becoming a reality.
On Friday, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration approved the basic strategy for the Jangbogo-N project, aimed at developing nuclear-powered submarines using domestic technology.
The "N" stands for "Next generation," "Nuclear power," and "Neo technology."
The project has been exempted from a preliminary feasibility study on security grounds, bypassing a process that typically takes one to two years.
Under the plan, a shipbuilder will be selected through competitive bidding among domestic companies, with a contract expected to be signed in the second half of next year.
But the government will directly procure key components, including small modular nuclear reactors and major weapons systems, before supplying them to the chosen shipbuilder.
Unlike conventional diesel-electric submarines, nuclear-powered vessels can remain submerged for much longer and operate at higher speeds.
DAPA says the new submarines will strengthen the country's deterrence against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats while enhancing its underwater strike capabilities.
The project's expected to begin in 2027, with the first submarine targeted for launch in the mid-2030s and operational deployment in the late 2030s.
The total cost has yet to be finalized, although estimates suggest it could reach nearly 29 trillion won or over 21 billion U.S. dollars.
With the basic strategy now approved, attention turns to the selection of a domestic shipbuilder and the development of the submarines' nuclear propulsion system.
