라무스오르타 동티모르 대통령이 전하는 ‘디지털 평화’… 노벨평화상에서 인터넷평화상으로
Also here in Seoul, Timor-Leste's President José Ramos-Horta has been awarded the Internet Peace Prize, highlighting his call for peace and reconciliation in the digital age.
Shin So-eun reports.
The message of spreading peace online took center stage on Friday as Timor-Leste's president José Ramos-Horta received the 2026 Internet Peace Prize at an award ceremony held in South Korea's National Assembly.
Jointly organized by the Sunfull Foundation and the National Assembly's Sunfull Committee, the ceremony honored 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ramos-Horta's lifelong dedication to peace and human rights while highlighting the need to uphold those values in the digital world.
"President Ramos-Horta forgave even the man who shot him. But when malicious comments are answered with more malicious comments, hate has no end. But a single kind comment to someone who is hurting can save a life at a time when verbal abuse and hate are everywhere."
In the ceremonial speech, President Ramos-Horta first highlighted the longstanding friendship between South Korea and Timor-Leste, recalling South Korea's peacekeeping efforts, including humanitarian workers and religious leaders during his country's struggle for independence.
He also praised South Korea’s courage and commitment to democracy, which he first witnessed during a visit at former President Kim Dae-jung’s invitation, expressing hope that the same spirit would lead to lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
"South Korea, I would say they are ultimate diplomats, being able to keep the peace, avoid any escalation of the tensions with North Korea. And I would appeal to Kim Jong Un to North Korea please please talk to your brothers, your sister from South Korea It is time to sit down open minded."
He also remained firm in his interpretation of peace amid chaos unfolding around the world.
"My understanding of peace is actually very simple: a child, a human being is not threatened"
Looking ahead, Timor-Leste's president expressed hope that stronger ties with South Korea, guided by ASEAN’s diplomatic wisdom, would pave the way for lasting peace across the region.
In a digital realm that has no boundaries, ceremonies like this reinforce to rise above hatred and malicious comments.
