Chinese Gravity-1 rocket launches 9 satellites from sea near Shanghai

China’s commercial space sector achieved a major milestone as Orienspace’s solid-propellant Gravity-1 rocket launched from the "Oriental Spaceport" vessel off East Shanghai, successfully deploying nine satellites into orbit. Carrying eight Spacesail Constellation units and one EUHT test satellite—all manufactured locally—the mission established a seamless closed loop connecting Shanghai's satellite manufacturing, offshore launches, and constellation operations. By loading payloads directly onto vessels near local factories, the flight minimized transport radiuses while setting national records for single offshore launch payload weight (over 3 tons) and orbital altitude (800 km).

The mission—Gravity-1's fourth flight and second deep-sea launch in 56 days—validated its high-salinity marine resilience and utilized a stacked payload configuration to boost volume efficiency and cut average launch costs. Looking ahead, Orienspace is advancing its reusable liquid-propellant Gravity-2 rocket to deliver a 21.5-ton LEO capacity and further drive down launch expenses.
