World's fastest water-saving lock: How China new canal stacked basins moves cargo over 65m waterdrop

The newly-opened 134.2-kilometre Pinglu Canal megaproject in China uses a world-first, three-tier stacked design to move high volumes of cargo across a steep 65-metre water drop without wasting local resources.

This direct route linking China’s landlocked southwest region to the ocean stacks basins vertically with one hidden underground, allowing the system to recycle huge amounts of water in minutes. The team designed a system of 96 release holes beneath the lock chamber to distribute 300,000 cubic meters of water evenly each time.

The resulting system is the world’s fastest-operating water-saving lock, with massive valves that open in 1 minute and close in just 27 seconds, up to four times faster than conventional designs.

Two of the three navigation hubs allows the canal to recycle more than 60% of its water, saving over 1 billion cubic meters annually. Closer to the ocean, the other navigation hub uses a twin-lock system where side-by-side lanes share water back and forth, cutting waste by half.
