China and AI discussed as experts call for new global security rules at Xiangshang Forum in Beijing

The 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum opened Wednesday morning, bringing around 2,000 global leaders together to discuss international order and strategic stability. Opening the first session, Singapore’s Minister for Defence, Chan Chun Sing, warned that accelerating tech races and weaponized trade are creating a dangerous security trap where countries prioritize self-interest over cooperation, and no one wins.

Shifting the focus back to the region, Yu Tiejun from Peking University noted that while the Asia-Pacific remains relatively stable, growing undercurrents have brought it to a turning point as neighbors rethink their security.

With a key focus on AI, experts at the forum suggested that developing nations unite to protect their data rights, but noted that global AI cooperation requires win-win solutions from dominant powers.

Marking its 20th anniversary, the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum runs from September 15 to 17 under the theme "Build Consensus on Stability, Advance Security Governance Together”.
