Modern fireworks burst upward, but Nakhwa Nori's flames drift slowly downward. This Korean tradition, designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage of South Gyeongsang Province in 2008, creates fire using only oak charcoal and hanji paper. Artisans hand-make about 4,000 fire sticks over two months, wrapping charcoal powder in cotton cloth and twisting two rods into one for an even, steady burn. The sticks are hung on wires above the pond at Mujinjeong, then lit one by one as roughly 6,000 visitors watch the sparks paint the water below. No gunpowder, no electricity, just fire shaped entirely by human hands.
