Systematic Sabtage! Europe's supermarket freezers HACKED, forcing massive food disposal

Dozens of supermarkets and independent grocery stores across six European nations—including Sweden, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Ireland, Netherlands, and Estonia—have been hit by a coordinated wave of cyberattacks targeting commercial refrigeration systems. Attackers remotely breached cooling controls, overriding evaporators into defrost mode and driving temperatures as high as 50°C (122°F) overnight. The incident has forced major chains like ICA, Delhaize, Carrefour, Intermarché, and Spar, along with an IKEA superstore, to dispose of millions of euros worth of spoiled food, marking a dangerous shift in physical cyber threats targeting vital food supply infrastructure.

The attack mirrors a similar large-scale breach in France last month, where hackers remotely seized control of cooling networks in hundreds of stores. In Sjöbo, southern Sweden, an ICA store manager described the deliberate hacking of freezers as a form of "terrorism," while Belgian refrigeration manufacturer Sabcobel confirmed that units were remotely switched to defrost mode around 3:30 a.m. Monday. With police agencies investigating the breach and store managers tallying massive losses in fresh meat, produce, and frozen goods, cybersecurity experts warn that IoT-connected commercial refrigeration infrastructure represents an increasingly vulnerable target for industrial sabotage.
