From homegrown engines to two-seater: How China's J20 evolves over 10 years

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the J-20 stealth fighter's public debut at Airshow China in Zhuhai.
Over the past decade, the J-20 has evolved from relying on imported engines to being powered by fully homegrown ones.
The engine upgrade addressed the fighter's long-standing "heart" problem.
Meanwhile, the development of the two-seat J-20S variant has expanded the combat capabilities of traditional fifth-generation fighters.
As the world's only publicly unveiled two-seat stealth fifth-generation fighter, the J-20S goes beyond the mission capabilities of single-seat aircraft.
Meanwhile, Chinese military aircraft designers behind the J-20 have recently proposed a potentially revolutionary approach to integrating large antenna arrays into aircraft wings, using flight manoeuvres and coordinated formations of unmanned aircraft to expand radar coverage.
It could potentially be applied to future Chinese combat aircraft, reportedly including the J-20 and next-generation designs known as the J-36 and J-50, support in building multifunctional, high-performance airborne early-warning systems.
