South African cherries, Australian avocados set to make import expo debut in Shanghai

At 2:00 p.m., a 200-kilogram shipment of fresh South African sweet cherries arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, cleared by Shanghai Customs for its domestic debut at the 9th China International Import Expo (CIIE). Benefiting from South Africa's high diurnal temperature variation, these cherries feature a crisp texture and balanced sweetness. Maturing three weeks earlier than South American competitors and backed by zero-tariff preferences, the fruit fills a key market gap in China. The cherries join other global debuts at the "National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai)," including award-winning Australian specialty coffee from Toby's Estate and fresh Australian avocados making their third CIIE appearance.

The display of these unregistered agricultural products is enabled by the CIIE special concession approval policy, a key institutional innovation introduced by China Customs. Rather than lowering biosecurity standards, the policy grants provisional access to high-quality foreign agricultural products under strict risk controls before formal quarantine protocols are finalized. With custom declarations, priority inspections, and tailored one-on-one guidance provided for first-time participating nations like Seychelles and Romania, the CIIE continues to serve as an "open incubator" for global products tapping into the Chinese consumer market.
