민항기는 겉보기에 멀쩡해 보이는 폐부품이 블랙마켓으로 흘러가 가짜 부품으로 둔갑하는 것을 막기 위해, 국제 규정(FAA, ICAO 등)은 폐부품의 원형을 완전히 훼손하도록 강제하고
군용기는 스텔스 도료나 핵심 부품이 밀수출되어 기술 탈취되는 것을 막기 위해, 미 국방부는 동체를 형체도 없이 철저히 파괴할 것을 명령함.
[폐기의 단계]
전원 및 압력 차단 : 감전과 스파크로 인한 사고를 막기 위해 배터리와 모든 오일/가스를 완벽히 제거.
핵심 부품 탈거 : 비행기 가치의 80%까지도 차지하는 엔진을 포함해 랜딩기어, 항전 장비 등을 떼어냄.
내부 철거 : 좌석과 구리 전선 등을 뜯어내어 거대한 빈 깡통 상태로 만듦.
중장비 절단 : 크게 잘라낸 뒤 잘게 부숨.
이후 파쇄기를 거쳐 금속 분류, 용광로로 이어진 뒤 재활용 됨.
