Your textbook lied about this Korean grammar! #koreanlanguage

That "first month" grammar you learned? ✋
Koreans kind of don't follow it. Part 2 👇

📖 The rule:
To make a noun negative, you use 이/가 아니다.
✅ 학생이에요 → 학생"이" 아니에요. (I'm a student → I'm not a student)
✅ 의사예요 → 의사"가" 아니에요. (I'm a doctor → I'm not a doctor)
Nouns take the 이/가 particle.

And here's the thing —
even when you stretch it into a guess, the form doesn't change.
✅ 학생이 아닐까요? (I think they're probably a student?)
✅ 의사가 아닐까요? (I think they're probably a doctor?)
The 이/가 stays right where it is.

Verbs & adjectives? Different story — those flip to 지 않다.
✅ 가지 않아요. (I don't go)
✅ 예쁘지 않아요. (It's not pretty)

🗣️ Real life:
Turn on any variety show or interview and you'll hear the -이지 않을까 form everywhere:
"어른스러움이지 않을까…" → I'd say it's his/her maturity…?
"비슷한 마음이지 않을까 싶어요." → I think we're all feeling the same way…?
"파격적인 컨셉이지 않을까 싶어요." → I'd say it's a pretty bold concept…?

🤔 Wait, why?
People are taking 지 않다 — the verb & adjective one — and sticking it onto nouns.
Nouns aren't supposed to take it... but here we are.

💡 My theory:
Korean has one go-to way to softly float an opinion: ~지 않을까?
재밌지 않을까? (I think it's probably fun?)
힘들지 않을까? (I think it's probably hard?)
괜찮지 않을까? (I think it's probably fine?)
We say it all day.
Nouns are the one exception where you're "supposed to" switch to 이/가 아닐까.
And honestly? Our brains just can't be bothered to switch.

🏛️ One more thing:
Last time, tons of people had asked the National Institute of Korean Language about the grammar.
This one? Barely any discussion out there.
Maybe it just sounds so natural nobody even stops to question it. 👀

🚨 BUT important:
It's still not standard.
On TOPIK, especially TOPIK II writing where you're making an argument, use:
verb + 지 않을까 싶다
noun + 이/가 아닐까 싶다
Every time. Don't lose points over this.
