A theatrical people who embodied the people, a play writer and a director Kim Hyun Woo. Unlike his meek & gentle looks, it transpired that he is so sharp and delicate during he works. For twelve years as a theatrical people, there are usual but special, familiar but strange contemplative views for dairy life in his dozen works.

In fact, he started his directing with ‘Your Story’ in 2005 since then he has expanded his work into play, musical and other genre of performance as a writer & director. And he wrote & directed more than dozen plays such as ‘Sidewinder’, ‘Faguan’, ‘Low Night’, ‘Bernard’, ‘Hwamu Shimcheong’, ‘I hate Christmas’, ‘The Lost’, ‘Terminal’, musical ‘My Bucket List’ and more from now.

Also, these days he is more focused on writing projects and now he is involved in collaboration projects with artists from writers’ group ‘Dok’. ‘Dok’ is a writers’ group, which is organized with 9 writers who graduated from Korea National University of Arts. He is one of them and he also works as in-house director of the group. CultureM Magazine meets a Korean play writer and a director Kim Hyun Woo who is awakening in people that turned skeptics to optimist for the world.

사람을 담는 연극인, 극작가 겸 연출가 김현우. 순해 보이는 인상과는 달리 사실 그는 굉장히 영민하고 예민한 사람이다. 연극인으로 살아온 지난 12년의 세월 동안, 그가 작업한 수 십여 편의 작품에는 일상을 관조하는 평범하지만 특별한, 익숙하지만 생경한 호흡이 곳곳에 묻어있기 때문이다.

2005년, 데뷔 연출 작품인 연극 ‘당신 이야기’로 연극계에 입봉한 김현우는 그 때부터 본격적으로 극작가이자 연출자의 길을 걷게 된다. 그리고 지금까지 ‘붓다마이바디’, '사이드와인더’, '파관, '낮은 밤', '베르나르다’, ‘화무심청’, 'I hate Christmas', ‘마이 블러디’, '총각네 야채가게 in Tokyo', ‘The Lost’, '터미널’, 뮤지컬 ‘마이 버킷 리스트’ 등의 작품을 통해 보다 단단한 연극인으로 성장해왔다.

또한 최근 연출보다는 작품 구상과 글쓰기에 여념이 없는 그에게 ‘창작집단 독’은 연극인으로서 지내온 시간 속에서 빼놓을 수 없는 가장 가까운 벗이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 한국예술종합학교 연극원 극작과 출신의 9명의 작가로 이뤄진 작가집단인 ‘창작집단 ‘독’은 지난 11년 동안 서로에게 힘이 되어주는 동반자적 역할에 더해 하나의 주제를 놓고 9명의 작가들이 서로 다른 이야기를 풀어내는 형식의 ‘독 플레이’라는 작품으로 기존의 무대에서는 찾아 볼 수 없었던 신선하고 독창적인 이야기를 꾸준히 펼쳐왔기 때문이다.

지리멸렬한 일상 속에서 벌어지는 특별한 이야기 보다는 우리 모두가 맞닥드리고 있는 일상을 조금 더 특별하게 그리고 싶은 남자. 컬쳐엠매거진이 사람에 눈을 떠 세상을 긍정하고픈 극작가 겸 연출가, 김현우를 만났다.
