Creating interspace for arts and the public to meet, an artist Bas Soo Young 설치예술가 배수영을 만나다

Bae Soon Young is a real jack-of-all-trades artist who is creating interspace for arts and the public to meet by an installation, art directing specialized in public art projects. As installation artists, she has been doing solo exhibitions and is involved in many exhibitions and art fairs overseas.

In fact, she personally believes that she as an artist must never stop creating new artwork. She also believes that an artist must be absorbed in thoughts of one’s artwork and create something that is based on one’s original idea. As most of artists work on their personal projects, in the meantime some artists can expand their thoughts into next projects or public art projects and that is where she comes in as public art director.

CultureM Magazine meets a Korean artist Bae Soo Young who is communicating with the public by her public art projects.

설치 예술, 아트 디렉팅, 공공 미술 프로젝트 등 순수 예술의 적극적인 사회 참여를 위해 대중과의 지속적인 소통을 이어가고 있는 배수영 작가. 설치 예술가로서 국내외를 넘나들며 수 십 여 차례의 단체전과 개인전을 통해 그녀는 이미 대중과 유리된 예술이 아닌 대중과 결합된 접점 위에 창조되는 작품을 선보여온 작가로 입지를 굳혀왔다.

특히, 예술가는 꾸준히 개인 작업을 고민하고 창의력을 발휘하는 것, 그 이상의 가치를 실천하기 위해 공공미술이라는 분야로 더 많은 사람들과 소통을 시도해 온 것이다. 그런 그녀의 대표작이라고 할 수 있는 공공미술 프로젝트는 2012년부터 최근까지 꾸준하게 선보여 온 DNA KOREA라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

‘Donation aNd Art’의 약자인 DNA KOREA는 강원도 지역의 오래된 공간을 미적인 요소를 더해진 새로운 공간으로 재 창조해 문화 예술과 조금은 거리가 있는 사람들에게 보다 쉽게 예술의 가치를 알려온 것이다. 또한 2015년에는 신촌의 명물로 불리는 ‘신촌 플레이 버스’ 디렉팅을 통해 ‘신촌’이라는 공간의 역사성을 새롭게 조명해 공공미술의 의미를 더 하는 작업을 꾸준히 선보여왔다.
