Endless discoveries of relations between people, a Korean artist Son Won Young 관계에 관한 끝없는 질문, 작가 손원영

A Korean artist, Son Won Young suggests about endless discoveries of relations between people since debut. Although her works are based in painting but she finds great source of motivation in thinking of ways to escape one-dimensional space. Even though she has been working on painting projects consistently, now I am trying 3demnsional projects, installation art projects and other projects that help me connect with local citizens.

When we look her art pieces, we can easily check out various puzzle images on her pieces. In fact, she is creating something about ‘relation’ and the puzzle motif works as one of the very important images for her work. Puzzle, to her understanding, is very similar to human being. When it is alone, it holds no power or meaning, but when you put them together, it starts to form one big image and meaning.

So, she expresses constantly about the stories of relations through puzzle images on her art pieces. CultureM Magazine meets a Korean artist, Son Won Young who is creating something about the relation and trying to show you with puzzle pieces.

사람과 사람, 사람과 사물 등 일상의 다양한 ‘관계’를 퍼즐을 모티브로 작업 활동을 하고 있는 손원영 작가. 차분한 말투와는 달리 그녀의 작업실에는 성인 남성들이 한 번도 구경해보지 못했을 법한 공구들이 가득 걸려있었다. 분명 작가로서 활동해온 오래된 구력만큼이나 그녀의 작품에는 다양한 레이어가 있는 것이 확실했다.

손원영 작가. 그녀는 페인팅 위주의 작업을 하고 있지만 입체, 설치, 지역주민들과 함께 나눌 수 있는 작업 등의 다양한 시도를 통해 평면을 벗어나 다른 매체로의 확장을 그리는 작업을 함께 해왔다. 사실 그녀의 작품 속에 녹아 있는 가장 큰 관심사인 ‘관계’는 하나가 아닌 다른 것들과 함께해 이야기를 만들어가는 모든 과정을 내포하고 있다. 또한 그녀의 작품 속에서 표현되는 퍼즐의 이미지는 마찬가지로 하나로는 아무런 의미도 없지만 모이면 커다란 의미를 만드는 과정을 담고 있는 것이다.

숲에서는 숲을 볼 수 없지만 숲을 나서면 숲을 볼 수 있는 것처럼 ‘관계’를 넘어 그 안에 있는 관조의 미학을 제시하고 있는 그녀. 컬쳐엠매거진이 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 퍼즐 이미지를 통해 ‘관계’를 이야기하는 손원영 작가를 만났다.
